The best provider for your knee is the one that answers six questions in writing, not the closest clinic. Where do the cells come from: your own marrow or fat, harvested the same day, or a vial? Who performs the harvest and injection, under live ultrasound? What grade is your arthritis, and does the evidence cover it? What are the cells paired with? Will they tell you no? Dynamic Athlete has no Denver office. We are at 1790 30th St, Suite 270, Boulder, CO 80301, roughly 35 minutes from central Denver via US-36.
A knee that hurts, an X-ray that says arthritis, and a list of Denver clinics that all say they are the one. Here is how a physician sorts them.
The six questions, and why each one changes your result
What grade is my arthritis, and does the evidence cover it?
Ask for your Kellgren-Lawrence grade. The randomized knee trials enrolled grade 3, or grades 2 and 3, and a 2025 meta-analysis of 8 randomized trials and 502 patients found cell injections improved pain and function at 6 and 12 months with no difference in adverse events. Grade 4 with deformity sits outside that evidence, and we say so.
Where do the cells come from: your own body, same day, or a vial?
One version is your own bone marrow aspirate (BMA, also called BMAC) or micro-fragmented adipose tissue (MFAT), harvested and injected the same day. The other is an amniotic, umbilical or exosome product with none of your cells. Ask which. How we choose: MFAT vs BMA. The vial question: is it really stem cell therapy.
Who performs the harvest and the injection, and under what guidance?
Cells are only as good as where they land. Ask whether the physician who examined you performs both the harvest and the injection, under live ultrasound. At Dynamic Athlete, Aneesh Garg, DO, CAQ performs every Dynamic Stem Cell+ harvest and injection personally, under live ultrasound.
What are the cells paired with, and why?
In Level I trials pooled in 2023, knee patients given PRP or BMAC did better than those given hyaluronic acid, and PRP and BMAC did not differ. Ask what the cells are paired with, and why. We add high-dose PRP and fibrin-rich plasma when it makes sense for the tissue, not as a default.
What did the trials you quote actually test?
The 261-patient phase III trial used culture-expanded fat-derived cells. A 146-patient trial of grade 2 and 3 knees used donor bone marrow cells, with hyaluronic acid given to both arms. Neither is the same-day procedure performed in US clinics, ours included; a clinic citing them as proof of its own kit is borrowing evidence. Same-day results are self-reported and vary. Limits: side effects and risks.
Will you tell me if I am not a candidate, and what then?
Advanced bone-on-bone disease better served by other options generally rules it out, and a 35-minute drive does not change that. Ask every clinic what it turns away. We give a quote after a thorough evaluation and price the plan for optimal outcomes, not line items off a menu. Medicare and Kaiser are accepted for the consultation. Coverage: is stem cell therapy covered by insurance.
Who is a candidate, by grade
Decided at the exam from your X-ray, your MRI if you have one, and the knee itself.
- Grade 1: early arthritis, where PRP is typically the appropriate first option
- Grade 2 and 3: where the randomized cell trials enrolled (one in grade 3 only); the clearest case for Dynamic Stem Cell+
- Grade 4 with deformity: outside the trial evidence; the honest conversation may be surgery
Before you book, ask
- What Kellgren-Lawrence grade is my knee, and does the evidence cover it?
- Are these my own cells, harvested today, placed by the physician who examined me under live ultrasound?
- What are the cells paired with, and what would make you tell me no?
The question the drive answers
Roughly 35 minutes on US-36 is the smallest cost here. The larger one is a season lost on a product with none of your cells in it. Whether the drive is worth it: stem cell therapy near Denver.
Frequently asked questions
Who are the best stem cell providers for knees in Denver?
There is no ranked list worth trusting, because the clinics are not selling the same procedure. Sort them with six questions: where the cells come from (your own marrow or fat, harvested the same day, or a vial), who performs the harvest and the injection, whether it is placed under live ultrasound, what grade your arthritis is and whether the evidence covers it, what the cells are paired with, and whether they will tell you no. Dynamic Athlete has no Denver office. We are in Boulder, roughly 35 minutes from central Denver via US-36, and Aneesh Garg, DO, CAQ performs every Dynamic Stem Cell+ procedure under live ultrasound.
Does stem cell therapy work for knee arthritis?
In randomized trials of grade 3, or grade 2 and 3, knee arthritis, yes, for pain and function. A 2025 meta-analysis of 8 randomized trials and 502 patients found cell injections improved WOMAC scores at 6 and 12 months with no difference in adverse events. A 2023 phase III trial of 261 patients with grade 3 knees found better pain and function at 6 months than placebo, and a 2023 trial of 146 patients with grade 2 and 3 knees found better WOMAC scores at 6 and 12 months than placebo, using donor cells with hyaluronic acid given to both arms. Two honest limits: those trials used culture-expanded or donor cells rather than a same-day procedure, and in the 261-patient trial MRI showed no difference in cartilage defects at 6 months. Arthritis is managed, not cured.
What is the difference between BMAC, BMA and MFAT for the knee?
BMA is bone marrow aspirate, and BMAC is the concentrated form of the same marrow. MFAT is micro-fragmented adipose tissue, taken from your own fat. Both are your own cells, harvested and injected the same day. In Level I trials pooled in 2023, BMAC outperformed hyaluronic acid for knee arthritis and did not differ from PRP. In a 2024 network meta-analysis of 48 studies and 9,338 knees, PRP and hyaluronic acid improved pain and PRP, BMAC and hyaluronic acid improved function compared with placebo, with BMAC making up 2.5% of the injections studied and cortisone ranking near placebo. Which source fits your knee is chosen at the exam from your imaging and the joint, not from a clinic’s inventory. We offer both.
Is stem cell therapy for knees covered by insurance in Colorado?
No, not the procedure. Commercial insurers and Medicare classify MFAT and BMA as investigational for musculoskeletal conditions, so the injection is paid out of pocket. HSA and FSA funds typically apply, because it is a physician-delivered procedure for a diagnosed condition, and Cherry financing is available. At Dynamic Athlete, Medicare and Kaiser are accepted for the consultation and office visit, so you learn whether you are a candidate before any out-of-pocket spend.
How much does stem cell therapy for a knee cost in Denver?
There is no single price, because clinics are not selling the same procedure. A vial product, a technician-delivered kit, and a physician-performed same-day harvest placed under live ultrasound are different things at similar-looking prices. We do not publish a menu price. We give a quote after a thorough evaluation, we price the plan for optimal outcomes rather than line items off a menu, and every patient leaves with a good understanding of the next steps. Compare quotes on what is in them, not on the number.
Am I a candidate for knee stem cell therapy if I am bone on bone?
Usually the honest answer is that the evidence does not cover you. The randomized cell trials enrolled grade 3, or grade 2 and 3, knees. Grade 4 bone-on-bone change with deformity sits outside that evidence, and a clinic that promises a result there is selling hope. The useful conversation may be a surgical opinion, or how to use the time before surgery well. We examine the knee and tell you which it is, at the visit, before you spend anything on a procedure.
Do you have a stem cell clinic in Denver?
No. Dynamic Athlete has one office, at 1790 30th St, Suite 270, Boulder, CO 80301, roughly 35 minutes from central Denver via US-36. We would rather say that plainly than put a Denver pin on a map. One physician, Aneesh Garg, DO, CAQ, performs every Dynamic Stem Cell+ harvest and injection there under live ultrasound, with both MFAT and BMA available in the same room. Same-week evaluations are available, and Medicare and Kaiser are accepted for the visit.
What should I bring to a knee stem cell evaluation?
Your X-ray report and the images if you have them, any MRI, a list of injections you have had in that knee with dates, and your goal in plain words: the hike, the ski season, the job that keeps you on your feet. The exam adds what imaging cannot: whether the pain is coming from the joint, and whether your knee is one the evidence supports. In our Dynamic Stem Cell+ protocol, over 90% of our patients self-report a 75% or greater improvement, all without surgery.
